We, HALU Animal Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the area accredited with a
GOLD Rank Cat Friendly Clinic, from the International Society of Feline Medicine or ISFM.
Cats as most owners know are very friendly and caring animals in their own homes, but also very sensitive to change in their environments, especially going out of their comfort zone.
So it is very stressful for both the cats and owners, to take them to veterinary clinics.
We acquired this to show that our hospital environment, in comparison to other hospitals, will reduce stress for both the cats and caregivers especially when your cats are ill.
What is a Cat Friendly Clinic?
Cat Friendly Clinic is a worldwide program issued by the ISFM, the veterinary division of the charity International Cat Care.
Their goal is to address cats’ unique nature and needs, and to create more cat friendly clinics to reduce the stress of the cats and caregivers during hospital visitation.
There are three ranks to this program (Gold, Silver, and Bronze), and we were awarded the highest rank, the Gold Rank, due to our efforts in being a cat friendly clinic.
Below are some examples of the many measures we take to become a better, more comforting hospital.
- We provide a Cat Only consultation day, where we only do consultations with cats.
As it is easy to imagine that dogs can scare cats by hounding or just by peeping into the cat’s cage, we prevent that from happening by creating a cat-only consultation day at our secondary hospital (HALU+), where it is more quieter and stress-free.

- A wide hospitalization room equipped with a litter box and a place to hide, will be assigned to our feline patients staying overnight.
And of course this room will be exclusively for cats, separated from the dogs’ hospitalization ward with a soundproof wall, providing them with the peace and quiet necessary.
- All of our staff adhere to the “International Cat Care’s Cat Friendly Principles,” and “Cat Friendly Interaction and Veterinary Environment Guidelines,” and we avoid forceful restraint or inappropriate equipment such as muzzles, to make consultations as stress-free as possible.
Also, we use “FELIWAY® Classic Diffuser,” a pheromone(the feline facial pheromone, or F3) diffuser that is known to reduce stress and stress-related behaviors, and will help the cats to feel calm and relaxed during the consultation.
Our goal and mission as a Gold ranked cat friendly clinic, is to have all cats get the necessary and best possible medical care, with minimum stress for the cats and their owners.
